I knew the post Twilight era would bring us a fresh crop of supernatural love stories; I just wasn't prepared for the flood. Not to worry though, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES (2013) starring Alden Ehrenreich, Emmy Rossum, and Jeremy Irons is absolutely no threat to Twilight's reining throne. A Cullen vampire will never have to worry about a Duchannes caster ever threatening their territory.

Set in the south, we join the lives of two teens as they meet and subsequently begin falling in love to the utter dismay of their families. One human, and one caster (gifted with magical powers), they obviously have more obstacles to overcome than your average high school students. Further bound by a common history dating back to the civil war, the young lovers find themselves battling forces much darker than peer power or anything as common as teenage jealousy.

This movie takes a very dim view of secular life, jumping on every opportunity to poke fun at organized religion. Even our award winning 'adult talent' doesn't seem to be as enchanted with the storyline as our young lovers. Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson deliver their lines with a
tongue-in-cheek attitude usually reserved for comedies. Another missing piece is the passion. Ethan and Lena appear so much more comfortable in the library than in each other's arms.

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES will not be a mega hit or a cult classic. It's quite ordinary and further crippled by weak special effects and unsuitable costuming. NOTE: The comparisons to Twilight have to stop. Edward was suave and cultured where Ethan is just a homespun goofball. The Caster Chronicles novel written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Directed by Richard La Gravenese, PG-13, 118 mins, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, *** 3 stars out of 5.
