Deep Impact

I've always been a huge fan of disaster movies, especially those films able to successfully balance their special effects with their drama. DEEP IMPACT (1998) starring Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, and Elijah Wood manages to do just that. There is something special about experiencing a movie where we slowly learn of the earth's impending doom in step with our main characters. Watching those we've come to care about struggle to survive, totally aware that some will ultimately fail, can be a very emotional ride.

DEEP IMPACT warns us of the impending crash of an earthbound comet large enough to threaten the entire human race and every cellular based organism on the planet. As expected, world governments have made limited provisions for small cross-sections of society in an attempt to protect man and his way of life, but these preparations do not encompass the majority of the population. This poignant rollercoaster ride explores the guilt of the chosen few, and the sobering realities for those left behind.

Watching Leoni, a MSNBC reporter, struggle to balance her on-air responsibilities with her need to spend time with her estranged parents is a precarious tightrope walk at best. So if you've still somehow managed to hold back the tears, I dare you to sit through the 'astronaut's goodbyes' without reaching for a tissue. Plenty of action and CG special effects, DEEP IMPACT is a great date movie for a Friday night, definitely one of my all time favorites from the 90's.

I absolutely adore watching Morgan Freeman play the President of the United States.  Directed by Mimi Leder, PG-13, 120 mins, Action, Drama. ***** 5 stars out 5
