Whether or not you agreed with the U.S. Governments 'Detainee Program' and its 'Advanced Interrogation Techniques' (ie: extracting information through physical torture and deprivation) is not the question. ZERO DARK THIRTY (2012) starring Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, and Chris Pratt does so much more than just examine the theory of the ends justifying the means. It makes us ask impossibility in the world of al-Qaeda.

This spectacular motion picture directed by Kathryn Bigelow brings us directly in the room with the elected officials, the CIA Operatives, and the Navy S.E.A.L. Team responsible for the ten year operation to capture and kill Osama bin Laden. As we watch the film, we realize that for every answered question, another emerges. Was the Pakistan Government aware that it was harboring bin Laden? Maybe that's still classified, or maybe that information is being held for a future project?

I must admit that I'm a little bothered that two of the nine films nominated for picture of the year in 2013 are historical dramas dealing with terrorism, no matter how well they were done. ZERO DARK THIRTY was nominated for five Oscars in 2013 including Best Picture and Best Actress. Bigelow was clearly ignored as Best Director. R, 157 mins, Drama/History/Thriller, 5 stars out of 5.

Note: ZERO DARK THIRTY is a military term for the 30 minutes after midnight...the time of the raid on bin Laden's Pakistan compound.
