One of the most anticipated sequels of the year, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (2016) starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman struck out at the box office to the disappointment of many fans still touting the merits of INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996). Feeling more like a hard core sci-fi project, the personal stories and gradual building of anticipation as we drew closer to a possible invasion in the original movie were noticeably missing from this sequel, thrusting unprepared audiences immediately into the midst of tactical warfare.

It’s the end-of-the-world once again, and although earth has been diligently preparing for a second attack, nothing can protect the earth’s citizens from the alien’s advanced technology and brute force. Once again the bravery and ingenuity of a handful of brilliant scientists and military defensemen is all that stands between peace and total annihilation.

Will Smith is noticeably missing from this project, half the reports citing salary disputes with Fox, the other half reporting he’d had just finished filming the poorly received AFTER EARTH (2013) and needed a break from the sci-fi genre. My guess it that the truth lies somewhere in between. Sadly, this film truly suffers from his absence as Smith’s personal story was an anchor for the original plotline.

Although the fight sequences are impressive, watching Jeff Goldblum’s returning character struggle to stay relevant during the ensuing attacks was disappointing to say the least. Although the director revealed to Empire magazine that a third installment might be coming, I highly doubt it after the dismal showing of this project. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Rated PG-13, 120 Mins, Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Sequel, Released June 24th, 2016. Rated ***3 stars out of 5.
