Curiosity reigns supreme…and because of this simple fact, audiences will flock to THE INTERVIEW (2014) starring James Franco, Seth Rogan, and Randall Park. Another simple fact is that audiences will be shaking their head, surprised that they shelled out their hard-earned money to sit through such a juvenile comedy ripe with ‘boner jokes’ and a graphically violent ending. You can’t buy this kind of publicity, and Sony Pictures will be laughing all the way to the bank…on your dollar.

When ‘Skylark Tonight’, a celebrity tabloid show lands the interview of the century with North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-Un, producer Aaron Rapoport and host Dave Skylark decide to make the fateful trip across hostile borders to complete the interview. Recruited by the CIA, the unlikely pair are quickly instructed on how to turn their trip to Pyongyang into a covert mission to assassinate the evil dictator.

The fifth collaboration for Rogan and Franco, THE INTERVIEW is loosely based on former basketball star Dennis Rodman who was befriended my Kim Jong-Un and made a personal visit to North Korea in January, 2014. Not long after, Rodman publically spoke out against his decision to visit the dictator famous for his slave labour camps and countless human rights violations.

On Dec 19th, 2014, the FBI officially named the North Korean government as the responsible party in a major hack of Sony computer systems revealing THE INTERVIEW’S $44 million dollar budget, Rogan’s $8.4 million, and Franco’s 6.5 million dollar salaries. This controversy is far from over, and although president Barack Obama has already weighed in on the situation, the true and only winner will be Sony Pictures…the unfortunate inhabitants of North Korea not only absent from the movie…but absent by way of any measurable changes. Directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogan, Rated-R, 112 Minutes, Action, Comedy, ** 2 stars out of 5.
