ST. VINCENT (2014) starring Billy Murray, Melissa McCarthy, and Naomi Watts is an unexpected gem fighting to outshine the other hopefuls in the race for Oscar glory. With over 65 films to his credit and a movie career that’s still going strong after forty years, Bill Murray might have finally hit his stride with this latest project. Armed with a natural comedic talent and a lifetime of experience, we see Murray playing the hard-living, crusty old man with such believability that it’s hard to imagine him as ever being anyone else. Add McCarthy finally showing off her acting chops in a dramatic role, and we have a definite winner.

When Maggie, a newly separated single mom moves in next door to Vincent with her twelve year old son Oliver, their initial meeting promises anything but roses and rainbows. As Maggie struggles to make ends meet, she’s forced to accept Vincent’s offer of afterschool care in bid to secure her job and pay the ever mounting legal bills brought on by her ex-husband David. Add Vincent’s friend, the pregnant stripper, and the cast definitely provides an interesting melting point of world perspectives.

More drama than comedy, ST. VINCENT will have your emotions running the gambit. Taking you from from ‘snickers to sniffles’ with what appears to be effortless writing and well-paced directing, you won’t be bothered checking your watch or wondering when the credits are going to roll. This is a film that will leave you praising Bill Murray and wondering why he hadn’t taken a serious stab at so many other dramatic roles in years past. Directed by Theodore Melfi, Rated PG-13, 102 Minutes, Comedy, Drama, ****4 stars out of 5.
