Whether you view war as a necessary evil fought by courageous soldiers protecting our freedoms…or an absolute waste of human lives and resources accomplishing little more than population control, I guarantee you that FURY (2014) starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, and Logan Lerman will have a lasting effect on you.

FURY follows the command of army sergeant Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier during April of 1945 as he struggles to lead his tank crew through a hellish final push deep inside enemy lines. Saddled with a young gunner unwilling and possibly unable to kill the enemy, Collier must forcefully train the boy to be an effective soldier, or potentially risk his own life, and the lives of his tank crew.

Although Don Collier is a fictional character, the movie FURY is a composition of many war stories relayed by surviving soldiers from the European invasion. With the mission stacked against the allies, and Adolf Hitler having declared Total War- immobilizing every man, woman, and child to fight, the final push was a violent and bloody confrontation. But then glorification of WW II would have been a disservice to all the soldiers who sacrificed everything in their service.

Watching Brad Pitt rise one more step up the performance ladder toward his eventual iconic status, I couldn’t help comparing FURY to INGLOURIOUS BASTARDS (2009). Although both are war dramas, FURY did not contain any of the sarcastic wit that director Quinton Tarantino was praised for back in 2009. This film will not make you laugh, and it will not have you cheering. FURY will only make you question how anyone can be expected to return home after such a brutal experience and successfully rejoin society. Directed by David Ayer, Rated-R, 134 Minutes, Action, Drama, War. **** 4 stars out of 5.
