LET’S BE COPS (2014) starring Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., and Rob Riggle is a rather unique project in the sense that nearly all of the dialogue was improvised during the filming. Easy to understand when you realize that most of the cast are professional stand-up comedians who’ve earned their bread-and-butter while creating comedy routines on the fly. Unfortunately, although a few of the jabs might be noteworthy, the overall movie has very few laughs, and if I hadn’t been writing a review—I probably would have walked out of the theatre.

In this buddy-cop movie, two down and out friends mistakenly dress up for a formal masquerade party as uniformed police officers. Surprised by their neighborhood’s show of respect and the air of authority associated with their official titles, the washed up football star and down and out video-game designer find themselves donning the fake personas on a regular basis. It doesn’t take long, and within days their plastic badges and phony police car has them mixed up with genuine gangsters and a dirty police detective.

Surprisingly, as of September 14th, 2014—LET’S BE COPS had already earned over $94 million dollars worldwide. Not a bad profit considering the movie only had a $17 million dollar budget. This fact alone makes me wonder if audiences are desperate for an R-rated comedy in response to this summer’s fare of young adult weepers.

If you’re the type who gets a good chuckle out of slapstick comedy and the usual sight-gags associated with nausea, naked fat men, and sexually overt women—LET’S BE COPS might be worth your time. Be warned that the last twenty-minutes takes a seriously violent turn.

For a truly funny buddy-cop movie, I would suggest the 2014 version of 22 JUMP STREET. Directed by Luke Greenfield, LET’S BE COPS is Rated-R, 104 Mins, Comedy, Action, and Adventure. * 1 star out of 5.
