He may be sixty-one years ago, but Brosnan still has what it takes to pull off a very convincing anti-hero. THE NOVEMBER MAN (2014) starring Pierce Brosnan, Luke Bracey, and Olga Kurylenko is a satisfying spy thriller for genre enthusiasts and fans of THERE ARE NO SPIES from the bestselling NOVEMBER MAN book series written by Bill Grander.

Having relocated to Switzerland, ex-CIA operative Peter Devereaux had found temporary contentment running a local coffee shop for the last five years. Disappointed to find a former student has now become a mortal enemy, Devereaux is drawn back into the convoluted world of CIA agents and the Russian government by his previous handler in a valiant attempt to protect a prized witness who just happened to be his former lover.

I was truly impressed with the lack of CGI and the good old-fashioned car chases tempered with high level games of cat-and-mouse. Unfortunately, the plot can get a little weighted down with repeated twists and turns. THE NOVEMBER MAN is not perfect, but it’s more than watchable, if for nothing less than Brosnan’s convincing performance.

Pierce Brosnan’s turn at James Bond from 1992 to 2002 was an impressive feat, and for those unsure of whether he could carry a spy-thriller without his 007 tag, we only have to look at THE TAILOR OF PANANA, 2001 or back to THE FOURTH PROTOCOL, 1987. On an interesting side note, Brosnan’s co-star Olga Kurylenko was also a former bond girl.

With a sequel already in production, we have not seen the last of Peter Devereaux or the November Man book series. Directed by Roger Donaldson, Rated R, 108 Minutes, Action, Crime, and Thriller. *** 3 stars out of 5.
