Although it’s been sixteen years since their first collaboration, BLENDED (2014) starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore reminds us that some silver screen partnerships work better than others, no matter the project. Although BLENDED may not attain the box office success of THE WEDDING SINGER (1998), or 50 FIRST DATES (2004), it’s still an enjoyable comedic romp.

When Barrymore and Sandler find themselves struggling through a horrible blind date, they both vow to never subject themselves to that kind of torture again. As fate would have it, they do end up on some twisted, Brady Bunch-like, family holiday in an African resort. Forced to not only share accommodations, they must endure all the fun and festivities of a blended-family themed holiday.

Be warned that you’ll be subjected to your fair share of slapstick, and a little predictability with an obligatory teenage transformation, but BLENDED works. I’m not a hundred percent sure if it’s the relatable story, or the obvious chemistry between Barrymore and Sandler. Either way, the director has proven that he’s capable of balancing comedy with sentiment.

The first project for Drew Barrymore after a three year hiatus to in which she gave birth to two children with her new husband, the short break did little to dampen her comedic talent. Although thirty-nine years old, she’s still carries that air of sweet innocence we can’t help but love about her. Drew’s movie counterpart, Adam Sandler, comes off as an experienced soul. His dry wit is an excellent balance for the overly sweet tone that has been known to drown other family comedies.

Directed by Frank Coraci, Rated PG-13, Comedy, 117 mins. Although this comedy will appeal to a wide audience, blended families of all sizes will especially feel a tug on the heart as many of the scenes will most definitely ring true. ** 2 stars out of 5.
