I might take a lot of grief for my following position, but I’ve always felt that if you’re not willing to stand behind our soldiers, feel free to stand in front of them. Now with that duly noted, it’s time to discuss the movie LONE SURVIVOR (2013) starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, and Emile Hirsch. Based on the 2007 nonfiction book of the same name written by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson, this story graphically portrays the failed U.S. Navy Seals mission titled Operation Red Wings. LONE SURVIVOR is violent, and it’s bloody. The ultimate testament to man’s strength and willingness to survive.

When Seal Reconnaissance Team 10 was sent on a mission to capture or kill Ahmad Shah, an extremely dangerous al Qaeda leader in 2005, Marcus Luttrell and his team find themselves fighting for their lives in the Afghan mountains. Communications cut off from command, the small band of soldiers begin to realize that survival will only come at their own hands.

I would have relished additional background on the men who gave their lives fighting for their country and the world’s democracy. Instead, great pains were taken to re-enact the brutality of the ground warfare between the Seals and the Taliban. I didn’t find the obvious patriotism or bouts of sacrifice to be heavy handed, as it takes a soldier with an extreme love-of-country to endure Navy Seal Training, never mind deployment to a warzone.

According to military sources, the Afghan villagers who protected Marcus did so out of duty to Pashtunwali—their 2,000 year old code of honor demanding protection of those fighting against their common enemies. Make sure not to miss the photo tribute. Directed by Peter Berg, Rated-R, 121 Mins, Action Biography, Drama, History. **** 4 stars out of 5
