Movie Reviews ABOUT TIME

0.0 (0)

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it—a mantra that director Richard Curtis possibly lives by. So sticking with his successful rom/com formula, Curtis’s latest offering ABOUT TIME (2013) starring Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, and Billy Nighy hasn’t strayed very far from the old fare that we’re accustomed to with LOVE ACTUALLY (2003) and KNOTTING HILL (1999) already lining the rental shelves.

Upon reaching his 21st birthday, Tim Lake’s father sits him down with some earthshattering news that he feels compelled to share at this milestone in his son’s life. Not sure if he’s hearing right or is just too hung over to accurately process the information, Tim stares back at his father in a vain attempt to process the admission that all men in his family are capable of time travel. Eventually deciding that his entire life would be better served by a love interest, Tim dedicates the following year to finding the perfect girlfriend—a task proving more difficult than anticipated even with time travel on his side.

Having already experienced something strikingly similar with Rachel McAdams in THE TIME TRAVELLER’S WIFE (2009), you might find that ABOUT TIME is playing with your own position in the time continuum as you struggle to separate the two projects in your head. As you’d expect, our lead does address the possibility of amassing world riches and untold financial advantages, but in his wisdom, chooses to chase love over money. Oh—the dreams of the young.

Written and directed by Richard Curtis, Rated-R, 123 Mins, Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Comedy. Note: I’m not sure why ABOUT TIME carries an R rating. This is a chick-flick that’s suitable for any audience and definitely enjoyable fare for date nights of all ages. *** 3 stars out of 5.
