Sony Pictures has scored big with another high earning sequel, as CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 (2013) starring Bill Hader, Anna Faris, and Will Forte breaks in as the fourth highest September debut right behind INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2. Quite an accomplishment when you consider that September usually heralds the early release of Oscar contenders.

Once again we join a grown Flint Lockwood who now has accepted a job at The Live Corp Company, a giant conglomerate run by his favorite scientist and long established idol, Chester V. Within a very short period of time, Flint realizes that his old invention had not been successfully destroyed and is once again preparing to wreak havoc with its frightening animal hybrids like the watermelophants and buffaloaves. My personal favorites were the tacodile supremes.

The original CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS was loosely based on Judi and Ron Barrett's book of the same name. However, fans of the Barrett's will quickly notice that the sequel is not their follow-up story titled Pickles to Pittsburgh. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 is a fabricated sequel from the writers at Sony Pictures. Gratefully providing us with a quick recap at the beginning of this second installment, young audiences are able to quickly reconnect with the characters and the familiar storyline.

My three year-old male guest loved the movie, having just watched the original 2009 release on DVD a few months prior. However, without much of a musical soundtrack, I'm quite sure that toddlers wouldn't be as taken with the heavily dialogue-laden script. As expected, a CWCM2 video game was already released on Sept/24/2013. Directed by both Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn. Rated-PG, 95 Mins, Animation, Comedy, Family, Sequel. *** 3 stars out of 5.
