Nicolas Cage seems to be an actor who either bombs or excels with very little room for anything in between. THE FROZEN GROUND (2013) starring Nicolas Cage, Vanessa Hudgens, and John Cusack is a prime example of a film where Cage once again delivers a solid performance worth your entertainment dollar.

Inspired by the true story of serial killer Robert C. Hansen, THE FROZEN GROUND details the man who brutally kidnaped, raped, and tortured 17 to 21 women in Anchorage, Alaska for 13 years. When Alaskan State Trooper Jack Halcombe seems to be the only person taking the latest victim seriously—a seventeen year old prostitute named Cindy Paulson who managed to escape Hansen's clutches before he could load her in his plane and fly her to his hunting cabin—Halcombe finds he's spending as much time protecting Paulson as he is chasing her attacker.

Hampered by a few of the clichés common to serial killer / police dramas, THE FROZEN GROUND will still keep you interested and alternately shaking your head—wondering how good people could befriend a serial killer in a small community, enveloping him into the folds of their lives without ever recognizing his true evil. Vanessa Hudgens will also surprise audiences with her quick turn as a stripper and prostitute as she proves to have also outgrown Disney's G-rating.

Although Hansen was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and prescribed lithium during a previous incarceration for theft, he was never ordered to take his medication. Eventually caught by real life Alaskan Detective Glenn Flothe, Hansen was convicted and is presently serving 461 years in Spring Creek Correctional Center. NOTE: NAKED FEAR (2007) was also inspired by this story. Directed by Scott Walker, Rated-R, 105 Mins, Biography, Crime, Thriller. **** 4 stars out of 5.
