RIDDICK (2013) starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, and Katee Sackhoff is the third installment in The Chronicles of Riddick adventures. An unnamed planet inhabited with the most evil of predatory creatures is the backdrop for this film, and right from the opening scene we realize that it's truly a case of man versus anything else that moves.

Stranded on one of the most hostile environments imaginable, escape convict Richard B. Riddick is wanted universe wide. Just fighting to survive after being left for dead, he reluctantly realizes that activating an emergency beacon might be his only chance to get off the sun-scorched planet before a devastating storm wipes the surface clean. The beacon's activation is a double edged sword, as the call not only alerts professional bounty hunters as to his whereabouts, but also alerts a captain with a personal grudge to his location. Fighting to the death, neither the bounty hunters nor the captain of the mercenaries is willing to leave the planet without Riddick's head in a box.

Scorpion-like creatures known as 'mud demons' and vicious hyena-like dogs are the indigenous species that keep our anti-hero company as he waits for his rescuers.  Predictably, RIDDICK is a violent sci-fi full of surprise attacks and bloody gore. Listening to Diesel alternate between growling and purring, depending on the emotion required for each scene, somehow works with the harsh and
unforgiving surroundings. A poetic hero would have only seemed weak and misplaced in this fesolate environment.

Last time I saw Katee Sackhoff since her award winning stint on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was a surprise cameo on THE BIG BANG THEORY. This evolution to a tough, gun-toting, lesbian-mercenary was quite the change. Recommended for diehard sci-fi fans who love a little blood mixed in with their adventure. Directed by David Twohy, R, 119 Mins, Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller, Sequel. *** 3 stars out of 5.
