Not a fan of musicals, I decided to watch LES MISERABLES (2012) starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe anyway. So what did I think? Well, I'm still not a fan of musicals. I can take a movie where the cast occassionally breaks into song (eg. Chicago, Rock of Ages), but not one line of dialogue was spoken in LES MISERABLES. Everything...and I mean everyinging, was sung in verse.

Due to this fact, much of the original storyline was cut to accomodate the musical numbers. If you really want to experience the French historical novel written in 1862 of a parole struggling to reclaim his life after 19 years in prison for a petty crime, may I suggest the 1998 version with Liam Nesson, Uma thurman, and Claire Danes. You won't be disappointed.

Although the elaborate sets and historical costumes were impressive, I still prefer my dialogue spoken, not sung. By the way, my husband didn’t last 15 minutes.

LES MISERABLES was nominated for eight Oscars in 2013 including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Musical/Drama, 157 mins, PG-13 *** 3 stars out of 5
