Lynne Martin Talks Movies

THE AGE OF SEQUELS

As I once again stood in line at the box office, I couldn't help but notice the sequel posters adorning the theater's coveted wall space. Some highly anticipated by the viewing public, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (2016) and MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (2016), others new releases appear to be more aptly categorized as projects propelled by the studio's bottom line.

ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE (2016) will open with little fanfare as Fox Studios trusts that parents will recognize the brand and fill the seats. The fifth installment in a franchise that has already earned over 920 million dollars, how can we really question this kind of financial success?

What I do question is the loss of originality in favor of the bottom line. I can only imagine how many new and inventive projects have been stalled in favor of a reboot being green lighted by the studio for little more than its financial guarantee. Are we, the viewing audience, so conditioned to pick the familiar that studios are only acting in response?

I believe that the age of sequels can be directly linked back to the struggling state of our economy. As paying customers, most are looking for a positive experience and don't like taking a risk at the box office. Organizing a movie night for a family of four, complete with parking and snacks, can be a noticeable hit to the wallet...not to mention that it only entertains the brood for roughly two hours. So with a credit card in hand, many customers are going with a product they trust vs. a new offering with no proven track record. Sad but true, and more than understandable in today's economy.

I thought it might be worth mentioning that out of all the projected 2017 new releases, eight of the movies had reached at least the third installment stage. I've included a short list for your amusement:

PITCH PERFECT 3, INSIDIIOUS: CHAPTER 4, BAD BOYS III, CARS 3, DESPICABLE ME 3, WOLVERINE 3, FAST 8, and of course, FRIDAY THE 13TH: CAMP BLOOD which will actually be the fourteenth installment in that particular slasher franchise.

As long as the viewing public continues to vote with an ever shrinking wallet, I think we had better get used to new releases being little more than sequels with familiar characters and reworked plotlines.

There has been a fair bit of controversy surrounding DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012) starring Jamie Foxx, Christopher Waltz, and Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie has been touted as an old Spaghetti Western tempered with the violent outbursts of an underground dog-fight. I actually found it to be neither. Just two years prior to the United States being torn apart...

I heard a few adults complaining that HOTEL TRANSLYVANIA (2012) starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, and Andy Samberg didn't quite hold their attention, making them feel like it was just geared toward their kids. Well hello people! Isn't that exactly who animated features are filmed for... your children? I think the general public is getting a little spoiled, only...

Finally...a horror movie that's worth your time and your money. THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 2: GHOSTS OF GEORGIA (2013) starring Abigail Spencer, Chad Michael Murray, and Katee Sackhoff is not a sequel. Although advertized as number 2, the plotline and characters are not at all connected to the original HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT released in 2009. The fact that...

TOTAL RECALL (2012) starring Colin Farrell, Bokeem Woodbine, and Bryan Cranston is a remake of the original TOTAL RECALL released in 1990 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although the 2012 version is a respectable Sci-Fi in its own right with impressive special effects, this remake is lacking the same passion and character development that propelled its predecessor into the ranks of...

With two such award winning actors on board, you'd naturally expect an Oscar winning movie. Unfortunately, HITCHCOCK (2012) starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Scarlett Johansson suffers a little from bad direction. Only because of the movie's superb acting do we forgive the unexplainable shifts in tension. Set in 1960, we watch Alfred Hitchcock fight to bring...

JACK REACHER (2012) starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, and Richard Jenkins opened to a disappointing show at the box office. As expected, the movie has all the elements we look for in an action picture. What was surprising was the diluted version in which they were presented. Our lead is tough, but not really that dangerous. His co-star is...

MAMA (2013) starring Jessica Chaston, Nikolag Coster-Waldau, and Megan Charpentier might go down in history as having one of the best Movie Trailers I've ever seen. Somebody should definitely win an award for that masterpiece of editing. The full length movie however...it won't be remembered for much more than Jessica Chaston's first appearnce after her Oscar nominated performance in...

MEN IN BLACK 3 (2012) starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin is definitive proof that some series are capable of improving with age. This third installment in the MIB franchise breaks the mould and draws viewers back instead of turning them away, an unfortunate reaction after the previous release of MIB 2. Once again...

I've always been a huge fan of disaster movies, especially those films able to successfully balance their special effects with their drama. DEEP IMPACT (1998) starring Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, and Elijah Wood manages to do just that. There is something special about experiencing a movie where we slowly learn of the earth's impending doom in step with our...

An annual lottery selecting a teenage boy and girl from twelve neighboring districts for a fight to the death is the unfathomable premise for THE HUNGER GAMES (2012) starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutchenrson, and Woody Harrelson. What is equally unsettling about this movie is the inhumane reasoning for the gladiator-like fights. Once a year, the governing body...
