Lynne Martin Talks Movies

THE AGE OF SEQUELS

As I once again stood in line at the box office, I couldn't help but notice the sequel posters adorning the theater's coveted wall space. Some highly anticipated by the viewing public, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (2016) and MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (2016), others new releases appear to be more aptly categorized as projects propelled by the studio's bottom line.

ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE (2016) will open with little fanfare as Fox Studios trusts that parents will recognize the brand and fill the seats. The fifth installment in a franchise that has already earned over 920 million dollars, how can we really question this kind of financial success?

What I do question is the loss of originality in favor of the bottom line. I can only imagine how many new and inventive projects have been stalled in favor of a reboot being green lighted by the studio for little more than its financial guarantee. Are we, the viewing audience, so conditioned to pick the familiar that studios are only acting in response?

I believe that the age of sequels can be directly linked back to the struggling state of our economy. As paying customers, most are looking for a positive experience and don't like taking a risk at the box office. Organizing a movie night for a family of four, complete with parking and snacks, can be a noticeable hit to the wallet...not to mention that it only entertains the brood for roughly two hours. So with a credit card in hand, many customers are going with a product they trust vs. a new offering with no proven track record. Sad but true, and more than understandable in today's economy.

I thought it might be worth mentioning that out of all the projected 2017 new releases, eight of the movies had reached at least the third installment stage. I've included a short list for your amusement:

PITCH PERFECT 3, INSIDIIOUS: CHAPTER 4, BAD BOYS III, CARS 3, DESPICABLE ME 3, WOLVERINE 3, FAST 8, and of course, FRIDAY THE 13TH: CAMP BLOOD which will actually be the fourteenth installment in that particular slasher franchise.

As long as the viewing public continues to vote with an ever shrinking wallet, I think we had better get used to new releases being little more than sequels with familiar characters and reworked plotlines.

Reminiscent of the movie spoofs common in the early 90's, A HAUNTED HOUSE (2013) starring Marlon Wayans, Essence Atkins, and Marlene Forte is a satirical remake of Paranormal Activity, The Exorcist, and a collection of other well known horror films all rolled together. Utilizing the old ploy of 'found footage', this movie documents the possession and subsequent misery of...

FLIGHT (2012) starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, and John Goodman is an extremely powerful movie that will have you examining your own strengths and weaknesses should you ever be branded a hero. For anytime we set a person up on a pedestal to be admired and revered, we better first be sure that their life will hold up to...

There are many powerful adjectives I usually draw from when writing movie reviews. In this case, light hearted and cute were the two that instantly popped into my head when describing PARENTAL GUIDANCE (2012) starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, and Marisa Tomei. This movie is what I affectionately like to call a 'nodder', since dozing off for a few...

Once a movie is labelled as Sci-fi, it usually only attracts specific fans of the genre, moviegoers looking for cutting-edge special effects and futuristic plot lines. LOOPER (2012) starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt will appeal to a much wider cross-section of the population. Definitely a 'thinking man's movie', this script will grab your attention and...

I had never seen this movie before...yet I have seen it a thousand times. PARKER (2013) starring Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, and Michael Chiklis is so predictably formulated that I felt a little foolish even waiting for the end credits to roll. Adapted from the novel FLASHFIRE written by Donald Westlake, under the penname of Richard Stark, PARKER is...

If you're scared of 'creepy-crawlers', this is the perfect movie for you to watch as there is absolutely nothing to frighten you in SPIDERS (2013) starring Christa Campbell, William Hope, and Patrick Muldoon. Being a remake of SPIDERS from 2000, I assumed the producer and director would have polished the effects and fine tuned the acting to present us...

WARM BODIES (2013) starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, and John Malkovich is a movie definitely aimed at the teen angst crowd. Broken hearts all over the world will rejoice as young girls can now dream of turning an 'undesirable' into the love of their life. So much for yearning for the captain of the football team, you can now...

PROMISED LAND (2012) starring Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, and John Krasinski is a film that you just won't be able to leave behind in the movie theatre. You're going to invite this story back to your supper table, share it with your family, and even take it out for a drink with your friends...as it should be. This movie's...

Hard to believe, but WRECK-IT RALPH (2012) starring John C. Riley, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch is Disney Studios 52nd animated feature in their Classic Series. Disney definitely has the secret formula down pat, and once again, we the viewers are rewarded with a superb product to share with our families. We meet Ralph as he...

With all the excellent movies as of late, we had to know there were going to be a couple of duds coming down the pike. HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS (2013) starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Peter Stormare is definitely a film that has earned the 'dud' designation. Loosely based on a Grimm Fairytale, our main characters are...
